The two-speed technology divide in hospitality

Amid rising operating costs, labor shortages, and ever-evolving guest expectations, many hoteliers in Madagascar are betting on automation and technology to stay competitive. While these tools first emerged as practical responses to concrete challenges, they are now shaping a new hospitality landscape – a two-speed landscape.

On one side, budget establishments, often constrained by tight margins, are massively adopting self-service technologies: automated check-in/check-out, mobile-app services, elimination of non-essential positions… The goal is clear: reduce costs while maintaining a level of service acceptable to a clientele focused above all on value for money. Here, the experience is standardized, functional, and fast.

At the other end, high-end establishments use technology more strategically—not to replace, but to strengthen human service. There, digital tools free up time for staff, who can then focus on delivering an ultra-personalized experience to a demanding clientele. The result is augmented hospitality, where technology fades into the background behind an enriched guest relationship.

This shift creates a two-speed service model, with a real risk: a growing gap between service standards depending on the hotel category. It is no longer just comfort or décor that differentiate the segments, but the quality of human interaction and the presence of the human factor in the guest experience.

At Radama SA., we believe every segment can benefit from technology, provided it is done with intention.

The challenge is not to choose between the human touch and automation, but to define an intelligent balance that respects the brand promise and guest expectations.

In this new paradigm, it is up to the guest to decide. They will choose consciously—according to their sensibility, values, and needs—between a smooth but impersonal technological experience, or a service enriched with human warmth.

The future of Malagasy hospitality will not be determined by technological innovation alone, but by each brand’s ability to keep the human element at the heart of the experience.
